Why Raees vs Sultan clash was averted.
There were a lot of speculations about the SRK starrer 'Raees' clashing with the Salman starrer 'Sultan' at the box office on Eid. Who will win? Who will lose? Box office predictions of the clash were already being made. Fans were already routing for their respective superstars, both online and offline. But alas the clash will not happen. With news that Raees has been shifted to January 2017, the clash has been averted. SRK vs Salman - part 2 at the box office will not happen.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees to release in January 2017, won’t clash with Salman’s Sultan
Even when some have said that there is always enough room for two big star movies, concerned people will know that these kind of releases will not give the desired box office result as compared to when released solo. Two big releases at the same time will always eat into each other's profits.
Any smart businessman will avoid making losses. If there is a chance to make more profits no businessman would settle for less.
It's a smart move on the part of Raees makers to shift the movie to a different release date. For Shahrukh Khan, the change in Raees release date can only benefit him.
We have seen what happened when Dilwale clashed with Bajirao Mastani in December last year. Everyone expected Dilwale to maul Bajirao Mastani. But that did not happen. Even though Dilwale went on to become a hit, it did not perform as expected. Bajirao Mastani on the other hand did very well and even performed better than Dilwale at the domestic box office. The result of Dilwale vs Bajirao Mastani clash is that Bajirao Mastani beat Dilwale.
Shahrukh Khan's next release after Dilwale was Fan, a highly anticipated film with SRK playing double roles. Fan released with much fanfare on April 15th and went on to be a flop! Yes you read that right, Fan flopped at the domestic box office. SRK himself commented on the mediocre box office performance of Fan saying that the movie was not made for heartland mass audience.
'Fan' was never meant for heartland audience
Things are clearly not going in the right direction for SRK. When was the last time you saw a Shahrukh Khan movie become a flop?
SRK's next release after Fan is Raees supposed to release on Eid this year along with Salman Khan's Sultan making way for another starry clash at the box office.
The last time Shahrukh clashed with Salman at the box office was in 2006, when SRK's 'Don' released along with Salman's 'Jaaneman'. The result? Don went on to become a hit and Jaaneman flopped badly.
But things have changed since then. And this time the result might have been different. Salman Khan is riding high on the tremendous success of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which was both critically acclaimed and was a box office blockbuster. The later released Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was also a success at the box office.
While SRK's previous movie fan has flopped. Had Fan been a blockbuster, Sultan vs Raees clash would still have hurt both the films and as a businessman you always want to avoid making loss.
Salman khan's last film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was released in Novemeber 2015 and Sultan is releasing on 6th July 2016 after a gap of 7 months. Shahrukh Khan's last film Fan released on 15th April 2016 and Dilwale was released in December 2015. Raees's July 6th release would have made it SRK's 3rd film to hit theatres in the 6 months period. Audience saturation too may have played its part in the high voltage clash.
Well, more than anything such a clash is just bad for business.
