Joy Ride Movie Review | Contains Spoilers
Joy Ride starts with one Lewis (played by Paul Walker) buying an old Chrysler Newport car to drive home his childhood crush Venna from her University. Lewis then comes to know from his parents that his brother Fuller has again been arrested by the police. So, Lewis decides to go to Salt Lake City to meet his brother Fuller. Fuller then joins Lewis on his way to pick up Venna from Colorado. On the way they stop at a fueling station, where Fuller gets a CB Radio & antenna installed in the car. Fuller and Lewis prank a truck driver by speaking in a woman's voice. The prank goes horribly wrong and the truck driver decides to teach them a lesson.
When Lewis' brother Fuller gets into the scene causing a slight change in Lewis's plan, you can sense that this Fuller guy is going to get Lewis into trouble. Fuller's weird behaviour tells you that he may be slightly psychotic. When he pesters Lewis to prank call through the CB Radio using his female voice, you now definitely know that this ain't going to end well.
The anonymity and the voice of the truck driver "Rusty Nail", who gets pranked, really adds intrigue to the story and makes him an ominous character. And him ripping off the jaw of a man due to the prank, makes "Rusty Nail" more frightening. You now start to feel for the characters, especially Venna and Lewis. The comforting fact that "Rusty Nail" doesn't know them and can be gotten rid of any time by cutting him off the CB radio, goes out of the window when he tells them to fix their car's tail-lamp, and that makes him more threatening.
Joy Ride starts well and sets a good foundation for the rest of film. The character development is good and the narration gradually ups its pace, making joy ride an interesting watch. The movie sticks to its track and doesn't deviate from its plot. Some of the scenes are really well shot and they add to the mood of the film.
Even with all its good setting in the first half of the film, some of the portions/scenarios in the middle part are just plain brainless. The cornfield sequence where 'Rusty Nail' chases them in his huge truck is just totally stupid and makes the film less believable and less effective. And some of the plot points are far-fetched. But the above average climax, fast-paced narration and good performance by its cast, makes Joy Ride an entertaining watch. There is never really a dull moment in the film.
Overall, Joy Ride is a decent thriller and a largely entertaining film.
