Kalank Box Office Collection Analysis

Kalank, the Bollywood's latest multi-starrer, grand period-drama had a good opening at the box office by virtue of its big star cast and the hype surrounding the film. Kalank released in the middle of the week, on Wednesday, on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti which is a holiday in most parts of the country. The film collected around ~18.43 crores on its first day at the box office. However, the film was expected to collect above the 20 crore mark, given its huge release at the box office.

Kalank, so far is the biggest release of 2019 in terms of the number of screens and shows. The film was released in more than 4000 screens all across the country, and the number of shows were also significantly higher when compared to other big releases of 2019 like Kesari, Gully Boy and Total Dhamaal. So, it was fair to expect the film to take an opening of more than 20 crores, also given the fact that it is a multi-starrer film shot on a grand scale. But, looking at the first day collections, it is safe to say that the film has slightly fallen short of its box office expectations. The film had good first day advance bookings, and the morning shows also began on a good note, but, the brimming auditoriums and packed houses that the film should have seen in the evening and the night shows were somewhat not there, as the shows in the latter half of the day went quite flat as the number of spot bookings didn't see an overall rise that it should have seen.

Even with 4000 screens and substantially higher number of shows and a better holiday release, Kalank has failed to overtake the first day collections of Kesari. Kesari had collected around ~18.55 crores on its first day at the box office. While, Kalank had its morning shows on full scale, Kesari had considerably lesser number of morning shows due to Holi, as notable number of cinemas had started showing only from afternoon onwards, and Kesari's shows reached their full scale only by evening. Also, the fact that Kesari was a solo Akshay Kumar starrer, unlike Kalank which is a multi-starrer, which is also shot on a grander budget than Kesari. But, honestly, Kesari comparatively had a better single screen appeal than Kalank, which is almost a pure multiplex driven film. But, both Kesari and Kalank are largely urban multiplex films, when compared to films like Total Dhamaal and Simmba.

At the box office, Kalank is more comparable to Gully Boy than Kesari, as both Gully Boy and Kalank are pure multiplex driven films, but they are vastly different from each other when it comes to their content. And, even Gully Boy had a better Day 1 at the box office with only 3300 screens at its disposal, and notably lesser ticket prices. But, honestly, Gully Boy had an amazing pre-release buzz and interest among the audience, specially the youth, which cannot be compared with Kalank. And, also first day advance booking percentage of Gully Boy was better than Kalank. Even though both Gully Boy and Kalank are urban multiplex films, the audience profiles are appreciably different. Gully Boy was a pure youth film, and Kalank tilts towards the family audience. But then, Kalank has a confusing audience mix, because of its content and the kind of film it is. The film, is kind of unsure of who it wants target, and who its primary audience are going to be.

Kalank, by the looks of it, appears to be in the league of Padmavati, Bajirao Mastani and Ram-Leela. But, Kalank's box office performance post-Day1, puts it in in the league of films like Mohenjo Daro and Thugs of Hindustan, which were big-budgeted box office flops.

Kalank's collection dropped on Day 2 at more than expected levels, and the film failed to take advantage of the holiday on Day 3 (Friday) on the occasion of 'Good Friday', which is an official govt. holiday all across the country, as the collections failed to see any significant rise. The collections again dropped on Saturday (Day 4), which indicates the film's negative trend at the box office. Looking at the current trend, the Sunday collections are mostly going to be flat, if they don't take a fall; and the film will drop heavily at the box office on Monday. Crossing 100 crores looks thoroughly difficult from here.

Here Are The Top Four Box Office Openings of 2019

1. Gully Boy - 19.5
2. Kesari - 18.55
3. Kalank - 18.43
4. Total Dhamaal - 16.5

Kalank opened to mixed reviews from the critics, slightly leaning towards the negative side. And, the audience word-of-mouth doesn't appear to be good, going by the ground reports from the cinemas in the first couple of days.

End of 1st Week Update: Kalank failed to build on a good first day box office collection, as the collections fell drastically post-Day1, and never managed to grow to that levels even on Saturday and Sunday. The film took another nosedive at the box office on Monday, as it collected a mere ~3.85 crores. The bad audience word-of-mouth and the negativity surrounding the film on social media has hit the film hard, as it struggled to reach even 80 crores at the box office. With 'Avengers: Endagame' arriving on Friday, Kalank will be on its last legs at the box office, and its collections in second week will be around only 2-3 crores. The film won't reach the 80 crore mark even after week two.

End of 2nd Week Update: Kalank suffered a huge drop on its second Friday at the box office. The film which had recorded its collections in double digits on its first Friday, failed to collect even 1 crore on its second Friday. Kalank collected around an overall ~2.85 cr. in its second weekend. The bad reviews and word-of-mouth, combined with the release of the Hollywood superhero film 'Avengers: Endgame', spelled the demise of the film at the box office. Kalank's total collection at the box office at the end of two weeks (16 days, due to Wednesday release) is just slightly more than ~80 crores. The collections in the third week will be meagre, and will be even lower than its second week collections.
