The second installment of the teen college-drama film, 'Student of The Year' (aka SOTY), is all set to release this Friday (10th May) at the Bollywood box office. The first installment saw the debut of three new actors into Bollywood, namely Alia Bhat, Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra. The second installment, however, has an established face, Tiger Shroff, as its lead. But, the two lead actresses are newcomers to the film industry, and are debuting through this film. The first part served as a launch vehicle for the star kids, and SOTY 2 is also launching another celebrity kid, Chunky Panday's daughter, Ananya Panday. Student Of The Year 2 is helmed by Punit Malhotra, whose previous film as a director, 'Gori Tere Pyar Mein', was a box office flop.
The release of this film is well-slotted, as it is getting a solo release, and there are no big Bollywood films from the previous weeks that are running at the box office, as Kalank has been long done and dusted, and the last week's releases, 'Blank' and 'Setters', have been non-starters at the box office. And, even the Hollywood superhero franchise, 'Avengers: Endgame', has also considerably slowed down. So, there are no significant competition to SOTY 2 this week, and the film should take a good start at the box office.
The film's main lead, Tiger Shroff, is in a good form at the box office, as his most recent film, 'Baaghi 2', has performed amazingly well. But, 'Student Of The Year' is an altogether different kind of film, than the usual action flicks that have worked well for Tiger Shroff at the box office. All of the Tiger Shroff's films, specially the 'Baaghi' films, had a huge single screen appeal, and SOTY 2 will have none of that. SOTY 2, just like its predecessor, is primarily a multiplex driven teen college-going young audience film. 'Student Of The Year 2' will have very limited appeal outside of its main target audience. The opening day box office numbers will be good, but they won't be huge like Gully Boy or even Kalank. SOTY first part had collected around ~8 crores on its first day, and SOTY 2's first day collection can be in the same range, but slightly higher.
The film's box office prospects firmly rest on Tiger Shroff's shoulders and the SOTY franchise's brand awareness. Keeping in mind, the genre of the film, the lead cast, and the SOTY franchise's appeal among its target audience, the film's first day box office collection figures can be around 10-12 crores.
Overall, SOTY 2 may collect around ~10 - 12 crores on its first day at the box office.
