SOTY 2 Box Office Report
Student Of The Year 2; HIT or FLOP?SOTY 2 Box Office Collection Analysis
The second installment of the teen college-drama film, 'Student Of The Year', has taken a good opening at the box office. The film collected around an estimated ~10.75 crores on its first day. The first day box office collection figures are exactly as we predicted in our prediction article before the release of the film.
SOTY 2's first day collection is not up to the level of Tiger Shroff's previous film, 'Baaghi 2', but that was a totally different kind with huge single screen appeal. The audience spectrum was also broad for 'Baaghi 2', unlike SOTY 2, where the film is primarily targeted towards the teenagers and the young college-going audience, and the audience appeal outside of the film's primary target is very limited. Hence. the opening day box office numbers are good enough to build-on in the weekend, if the film gets a thumbs-up from the audiences. And, also considering the fact that Tiger Shroff is the solo established lead face of the film. The other two actresses, Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria, are debuting through this film. This is also a great number for director Punit Malhotra at the box office, as his previous film as a director, 'Gori Tere Pyar Mein', had collected around ~2.5 crores on its first day, and had went on to become a flop at the box office.
The first installment of SOTY was a mediocre film at best, and even the trailer for the second installment wasn't impressive at all. And unlike SOTY 1, this film isn't directed by Karan Johar. But, it still enjoyed a good buzz and the hype was consistent for days before the film's release; and the film went on to post a double digit opening day figure at the box office! Just shows the SOTY franchise's appeal and brand awareness amongst its target market.
The advance bookings for SOTY 2 weren't any particularly impressive, and were average at best. Apart from Hyderabad, it was Delhi-NCR which showed decent-good bookings at around ~15.5% seats booked from 874 shows (at the time of our report). The multiplexes did better business than the single screens on Day 1, and it was expected considering the genre of the film.
'Student Of The Year 2' opened to mixed reviews slightly leaning towards the negative side. The audience word-of-mouth appears to be mixed as well going by our initial ground reports from the cinemas.
SOTY 2 collections saw a growth of around ~18% on Saturday (Day 2). The film collected around an estimated ~12.62 cr. on its second day at the box office. The big growth is clearly missing, as the second day growth in collections are just moderate.
The Sunday collections failed to grow from Saturday, as SOTY 2 collected around ~1 cr. less than its Saturday collection. The not-so-positive audience word-of-mouth is clearly showing its effect on 'Student Of The Year 2' at the box office, and the high-profile IPL final cricket match further added to its woes. SOTY 2's first weekend box office collections stand at around an estimated ~35 crores.
