Veerana Ramsay Horror Movie Review
Veerana is a 1988 horror movie written, produced and directed by the Ramsay Brothers. Veerana has Hemant Birje, Jasmine, Sahila Chadha in lead roles. Veerana landed in trouble with the censor board and was delayed for almost 3 years. The movie was then revised and finally the censor board passed it with an A certificate in the year 1988.
Though most of the actors in this film are Ramsay regulars, the female lead in the movie Jasmine is a fresh face (Where is Veerana Actress Jasmine?). Jasmine has done a good job playing a possessed girl and also luring men.
Starting from the bathing scene at the beginning of the movie and continuing until the climax, Veerana contains many erotic scenes, mainly involving Jasmine. There might have been a lot more in the original cut of Veerana before it was revised for the censor board.
Veerana starts off with a good pace and loses it in the middle part. The film again tries to get pacy in the end. Compared to the other Ramsay horror movies, the comic element in Veerana is not that annoying. Satish Shah has done a decent job with his comedy. Gulshan Grover, who plays the peeping servant while Jasmine takes a bath, suits the role.
Rajesh Vivek does more than justice to the Evil Baba's role. Sahila Chadda looks cute, but her role in the movie is limited. Hemanth Birje is decent and tries to showcase his tarzan skills in the climax, thereby rubbing salt on the already messed-up climax. The only thing that remains in our minds after watching Veerana is its lead actress, Jasmine.
The horror elements of Veerana are quite good and well-shot. The scene where young Jasmine (played by then-child artist Vaishnavi of Shaktimaan fame) kills her aunt is a notch up and elevates the mood of the movie. The atmosphere, fog, and weird camera angles do a lot of good for Veerana. The possession scene also tries to be scary. Jasmine looks scary when she is possessed and sexy when she is seductive and playful with men.
Veerana is about a witch, Nakita, and an evil worshiper who abduct men from the forest and kill them to increase their satanic powers. This has been a problem for the nearby villagers for years before the younger brother of Thakur captures Nakita and kills her. Evil Baba then decides to take revenge on Thakur by making the spirit of Nakita possess young Jasmine.
After a fast paced start Veerana is slowed down by songs and unwanted side plots. Then again starts to get back on track in the latter half of the movie.
The climax of Veerana is a let down and everything is messed up. Too many fighting scenes towards the end, and the followers of the evil worshiper baba keep on coming. The so much hyped Nakita when she finally gets into her own body does nothing except wandering like a fool and she is killed within minutes! Nakita did good when she possessed jasmine.
Overall, Veerana is a good watch if not for the climax. Veerana can easily be trimmed out by 20 mins, taking out the thakela guest house plot and all the songs except the first song!
Rating-6.5/10
